Safety Zones on Sex Offenders

RESOLUTION # 16-004


WHEREAS; the Mayor and City Council of the City of Brazoria, Texas are deeply concerned about numerous and recent occurrences in our state and elsewhere, whereby convicted sex offenders who have been released from custody repeat the unlawful acts for which they had been originally convicted; and

WHEREAS; found from the evidence the recidivism rate for released sex offenders is alarmingly high, especially for those who commit their crimes on children; and

WHEREAS; the Mayor and City Council of the City of Brazoria, Texas desires to establish a policy which provides maximum protection of the lives and persons of the City of Brazoria; and

WHEREAS; the Mayor and City Council of the City of Brazoria, Texas value the innocent lives of the children in our community; and

WHEREAS; the Mayor and City Council’s compelling interest to promote, protect and improve the health, safety and welfare of the citizens of the City by supporting the passing by legislature to give General Law municipalities the authority to establish safety zones;

NOW THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF BRAZORIA, TEXAS:

Support legislatures for General Law municipalities having explicit statutory authority to establish safety zones to protect the citizens.

PASSED AND APPROVED this the 10th day of May, 2016.
